The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Redsox agreed to a trade yesterday that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett, and Nick Punto to LA in exchange for James Loney, Rubby De La Rosa, Allan Webster, Jerry Sands, and Ivan De Jesus.
The Red Sox got rid of more that $250 million in player contracts thanks to this trade, which is the largest in both teams' franchises.
In his debut last night for the Dodgers, Gonzalez hit a 3-run homerun in his first at-bat. Nick Punto pinch-hit and walked, eventually scoring a run.
Thoughts on the trade? The Red Sox lost so much money, and the Dodgers gained so much. The money is probably more important in this trade than the players.

I have mixed feelings about Gonzo leaving, but this deal needed to be done.
Goodbye underperforming Beckett and Crawford; hello $250,000,000 open salary space!

I hate to say this, but this is a really good move by the Red Sox. They traded away Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto. Let's think about this. They traded away the former Padres franchise player (Adrian Gonzalez) and the former Rays franchise player (Carl Crawford). The Padres got rid of Adrian Gonzalez because he had been acting up and they were desperate really. They traded him so they wouldn't eventually lose him to free agency. They then signed Adrian Gonzalez to a huge contract. The Rays tried to keep Carl Crawford, but they just couldn't compete with the contracts he was being offered as a free agent. Carl Crawford went on to sign a huge contract with the Red Sox. He has sucked since then. Karma. Not being sour or anything, as I'm glad I can sort of root for Carl Crawford now. At the end of the day, this was a great move by the Red Sox. They won this trade. In a few seasons, the Red Sox will be one of the best teams in the MLB because of this trade. The Red Sox are rebuilding and focusing on the future. The Dodgers are focusing on right now. They already have a lot of talent with players like Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez, and Clayton Kershaw. Now they have added a lot more talent. The Dodgers have a good chance to win the World Series with the talent they have. They had a chance before they made these past few trades, but now they seem to be a safe bet.
