I don't know why, I just think he is overrated. He is a good player, don;t get me wrong, but I think it's a bit weird to call him the best player in MLS. what do you guys think?

Sure, he is overrated. What can you expect though? America really doesn't follow professional soccer, yet so many tuned in to watch the recent World Cup. Who was the star on team USA during the World Cup? Landon Donovan. So can you really be surprised that he is overrated? He is the only player many Americans have ever heard of really. Maybe they have heard of David Beckham, but that's about it. Landon Donovan is an American born soccer player though, that's another thing that is such a big deal. An American born soccer player with the skill he has. Believe it or not, some people do not like David Beckham because he isn't American. So, you can't be surprised that he's overrated, as millions of Americans jumped on the Landon Donovan bandwagon when the World Cup came around. He is very good though. He's a fan favorite because of what he did in the World Cup and he's definitely in the top five.

Haha CMT you're right...the only soccer players that play in America I that know are Donovan and Beckham.
And yeah, America is so soccerly-challenged that we're too ignorant to think about other soccer players...if they hear his name on ESPN, then they'll like him.

I know the MLS won't let him, but the "best" player for your country should be In the Priemiership or BBVA. Go Stuart Holden!

"Best" will always be an opinion. Unfortunately, that means most opinions will go towards the fan favorites. Therefore, most will say that their favorite is the best. So... If Landon Donovan is the fan favorite, most Americans will probably say he's the best if they have an opinion to present. Also, Stuart Holden isn't American-born. Being American-born is what American fans like to say and it appeals to children and their imaginations. For example, an eight year old soccer player commentating his own little game inside his head: "2022 World Cup, Jim lines up, GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!"
A child's imagination is an amazing thing.

Fans Can't Be too Picky. A lot of their players are foreign born:
Freddy Adu Stuart Holden Teal Bunbury Alfredo Morales Timothy Chandler Edgar Castillo Jermaine Jones Fabian Johnson Mikkel Diskerud Eugene Starikov
That's Just recent call-ups....

Sure, but the little American boy isn't going to imagine himself being a European in the MLS. You expect them to imagine themselves being their favorite player or a MLS player who was born in or near their hometown. It all starts with the younger generation. The younger generation will decide whether the MLS will be popular in the next century. So, players like Landon Donovan are crucial to possibly the MLS's existence even.

Good point. I pretended I played for Manchester United . most kids, even americans, pretend to be a massive team like the Red Devils or Barcelona.

Manchester United is the big team people pretend they're on, if they follow soccer just barely...they're kinda like the Yankees of soccer, am I right?
