Gary Buttman *cough* Bettman announced the 2012 Winter Classic location earlier today. It was one of the worst kept secrets in NHL history, most people knew it was going to be the Philadelphia Flyers against the New York Rangers. Link.Personally, I am disgusted that the NHL is once again bringing back a team that was already in the Winter Classic. I think every city should be given a chance to play in one. I can only hope that there's a Heritage Classic this year, featuring new teams.

That's really dumb how the Flyers get to be in another Winter Classic. That isn't fair at all to the other teams.

I agree 100%. This was the worst kept secret in hockey.
I'd personally like to see a Winter Classic with Minnesota in it; that's not going to happen anytime soon. NBC wants ratings. They want teams that they know will draw. That's why you see Flyers/Rangers - because NBC's done that before during their GoTW.
I'm surprised they went back to a baseball field for this season.

i am done watching classics, same teams get boring. I didn't watch the Ovechkin versus Sidney Capitals versus Penguins game last year because I was busy watching another game entirely. I'm sure I'll hear it int he background, because I'll be busy doing other things, but still... It just doesn't sound as entertaining.

Winter Classic is so cool. But they need to give it to different teams every year.

i refused to watch the crysby ovi show last year, the league marketed for what it was worth and then some. as much as i hate both of them, they do a lot for the league and without them it could be in trouble.

I said something similar to this on another board. If you look at Winter Classic commercials on YouTube, you'll see what the NHL is focusing on. Let's see what the focal point in each ad was. I don't know where a video of the 2008 Winter Classic commercial is. If anyone is able to point me in the direction of a video, you will be thanked from here to eternity. If there was a commercial, I don't think it was focused solely on Sidney (the Penguins did play in that game.) 2009 - focus is on the whole "we're playing at Wrigley" thing. Take Me Out to the Ballgame is played; both teams and a lot of players are referenced. 2010 - focus is on going back to your youth. Both teams (Boston and Philadelphia) are referenced and multiple players are seen. 2011 - focus is on Sidney versus Ovechkin. There is no other player referenced by either facial recognition and/or name. I think both teams will be shown in the commercial for this year, but if you look back at ads for previous years, 2011 was the only time that they just threw the book out the window and got to the point.

i am not surprised by your findings, its the reason I had watched all of the previous classics and not that one. The over did the crysby ovi thing last year, which disgusted me to no end. sure they are the marketing kings of the league, but two players don't make a team or two.

It'd be nice seeing the Predators playing in the Winter Classic in the future, but I suppose they use the popular teams with large fan bases (bandwagon fans probably) as they'll get the best results that way with viewers and such. This year's Winter Classic sounds pretty lame, it sounded cool last year.
